Grandma's Quilts

Grandma's Quilts-
I was thinking recently about my materal Grandma's quilts. She made these during the Depression out of flour sacks and scrap fabric. What a beautiful job she did, all by hand. She created a work of art to keep her children warm and would probably be surprised it is hanging on my wall as a piece of art-

What treasures! You wonder how women who created the beautiful things had the time!

Beautiful. I have one of my Grandmother's too. She made a few out of old pajamas.

Stunning. What a treasure. I stumbled upon a big bag of feed sacks at an estate sale, at an old farm house in south Texas. I scooped them right up. Just holding that history in my hands makes me so happy. Hoping that eventually I'll sew together a basic quilt (if I can bring myself to cut into them that is).

Yes it's great to find those old Fabrics and grain sacks and there's even a book out about those

She had a great eye for detail and I know they used whatever they had

I agree, they are beautiful and real treasures. I wish I had mementos from my grandparents! :)

What treasures! I don't know of a single person in my family who quilted. Darn!

I always wonder not only how did they find the time to quilt but the fact that they sat and hand pieced AT NIGHT after all their other work was done and that the lighting they hard for their work could not have been good. Also, today we're able to cut pieces precisely using rulers and a rotary cutter but all of their pieces were traced and cut by hand with a pair of scissors. Anyone who has ever tried that knows how very difficult it is to get your pieces of fabric accurate using that method. But that's all they had. Amazing the beautiful quilts they created. You're so fortunate to have those made by members of your family.

I suspect she probably quilted during the long, cold, snowy Nebraska winters. Poor lighting, yes, but she got them done! I'm sure there were more, but those were the 2 my Mom had. I slept under them a lot in the summers as a kid :)
